Much of her professional and personal life was conditioned by her addiction to alcohol and other drugs, as happened to her mother, Judy Garland. She underwent several detoxification treatments. In 1984, she left the musical The Rink to rehabilitate at the Betty Ford Clinic.
She underwent hip, knee, back, and vocal cord surgeries. After fainting in the middle of a performance in Stockholm, she broke four teeth. In 2000, she contracted encephalitis. In March 2010, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, from which she underwent surgery twice.
Marriages
She married actor Peter Allen on March 3, 1967; they divorced on July 4, 1974. In September 1996, Minnelli stated, “I married Peter, and he didn’t tell me he was gay. Everyone knew but me.” On September 15 of that same year, she married producer Jack Haley, Jr., and they divorced in April 1979.
She remarried sculptor Mark Gero on December 4, 1979, and they were together until their divorce in January 1992.
